Another Day in Madrid: The Palace and Cathedral of the Almudena

We had a great day in Madrid at the Palacio Real and the Cathedral of the Almudena.  An interesting thing happened on the way there. While walking through the Plaza del Oriente, located in front of the Palace, we happened upon a beauty who I caught off guard. She must be famous.

The kids also noticed a friendly pigeon sitting on top of a Royal's head. Look at the surprise in their eyes!!!

Finally, we made it to the Palacio Real after all the other distractions.

After touring the Palace we visited the Armory. When we came back out on to the Plaza there was a rehearsal for a military parade taking place. It was great fun! Here are some pictures:

The kids even had the chance to have their picture taken with one of the military dudes.

They were so happy to be here that they couldn't contain themselves and were literally jumping for joy.

From the Palace we made our way to the Crypt of the Cathedral of the Almudena. It is located under the Cathedral is a wonderful example of neo-Romanesque architecture.

We then we up to the Cathedral, also a neo-Gothic construction . . .

With a very unusual mixing of neo-Gothic and modern design in the interior.

The ceiling offers an especially interesting design that runs the length of the nave and transept of the Cathedral.

We especially liked this stained-glass window.
